WELCOME TO PAYS DE BOUSSAC

Boussac is a fortified town of La Marche, close to the Berry and the Bourbonnais.

The Chateau was built in the 12th century. It belonged to the princes of Déols and made up the dowry of the daughter of Ebbes de Deols and afterwards passed into the ownership of Roger de Brosse who was an ancestor of Jean 11th de Brosse, a royal Marshal of France, companion in arms of Jeanne d'Arc.

In 1427, the town became independant and to defend itself built a fortified surrounding wall, parts of which remain today.

During the hundred years war, and the revolution the Chateau suffered destruction and the keeps were partially destroyed. The castle has also been used as a Sous Prefecture (till 1926) and then as the headquarters of the state police. At some time the decorative woodwork was used as fire wood; it was even used for the agricultural fairs.

Since 1965, the Chateau has undergone a large sympathetic renovation and is classed as an historic monument.

In the Chateau, you can find a permanent exhibition of ancient and modern tapestries and visit many rooms that have been furnished and decorated true to the period.

The medieval town of Boussac has some small picturesque streets with old houses that have listed iron balconies of the XVIIIth Century.

The roman style church, Sainte Anne, was restored and the bell tower is tiled with chestnut wood.
In the church you will find frescoes of the XVth century, wood carvings, and stained glass windows of the XXth century by Francis Chigot.
In one of the side chapels, you will see crosses sunk into the floor. These crosses signify the burial sites of some important inhabitants of Boussac.
In the townhall, there are three listed Tapestries from the end of the XIXth century in the style of the XVIIIth century. They were manufactured in Felletin to replace the wellknown « Lady and the Unicorn », which was discovered in the Chateau in 1841 and is now in the Musée de Cluny in Paris.
